Minerals are important substances that help your body do a number of different jobs. These things include keeping certain systems and organs working while also creating enzymes and hormones.
Two Types of Minerals
- Trace Minerals – the body only needs small amounts of these minerals. These include iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, and selenium.
- Macrominerals – the body needs larger amounts of these. These include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur.
It is possible to get all of the needed minerals by eating a wide variety of foods.
For some people, their healthcare provider may recommend a mineral supplement. However, for others, who may have certain health conditions or are on certain medications may need less of some of the minerals.
Talk to your healthcare provider if you are concerned about your mineral intake.
