The holidays can bring feelings of joy and excitement, but also fear and anxiety. Especially when it comes to food. All of the delicious dishes and treats happen just once a year. There is so much food and so much temptation at every corner. But don’t worry, the recommendations below will show you how it is possible to stick to your health and DayTwo goals all while enjoying this time of year.

1. Have a plan. Off to a family or friend’s house for a holiday gathering? Be sure to have a plan prepared ahead of time to keep yourself on track.

  • Eat as close to your normal scheduled meal time as possible
  • If a meal is scheduled for later than normal, try to eat a snack 2.5-3 hours before that meal. This will help keep your blood sugar steady and prevent you from becoming overly hungry and overeating at your next meal.
  • Bring a dish of your own to share that you know scores well for you.
  • Visualize how good you will feel at the end of the day after sticking to your plan.

2. Choose your meals wisely. Remember – you are in charge and you have the power to be wise and make choices that are going to help you reach your goals.

  • Before filling up your plate, take a look at your options. Build your meal in the DayTwo app to see what, and how much, will score well for you.
  • Eat slowly, and enjoy every bite to allow your brain to catch up with your stomach.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol. If you do drink, be sure to have your beverage with your food as alcohol can lower your blood sugar.

3. Stay active. Even though it’s the holidays, you can still stay active. Grab a family member or friend to take a walk after your meal.

  • Being active will help your body manage your blood sugar better than burning more calories.

4. Get your sleep. Preparing for meals and attending multiple gatherings can affect your sleep.

  • Lack of sleep can make it more challenging to manage your blood sugar as well as your cravings.
  • If you are unable to get the recommended 6 to 9 hours of sleep each night, try to fit in a quick, 30-minute nap during the day.

5. Give yourself permission, then get back on track.

  • Allow yourself some “wiggle room” – a score of 7 every now and then is acceptable during the holidays.

If you get off track for a meal or two (meals below 7), try to make sure your next meal is an 8 or above to ensure future success.

6. Keep YOU In mind. Remember your reason for joining the DayTwo program, but also remember what the holidays are all about – celebrating and connecting with those you care about. Have fun!
